# Video with text overlay

This guide describes setting up the Video with text overlay section.

Use the section to provide customers with a video, share information about your brand, describe products, or welcome customers to your store, etc.

The previous image shows a Video with text overlay section on a store’s homepage. In the section’s settings, a Video URL is set to display a video from YouTube. The video is displayed at Full width behind the text overlay area. The text overlay’s Layout is set to Display text overlay on a card. A Title and (formatted body) Text are set up inside the overlay. The overlay’s Shop Seltzer button links to the store’s “Seltzer” collection.

Note

When low power mode is enabled on Apple iOS devices, the Safari browser won’t play the section’s video. Instead, add a fallback image to the section. The fallback image displays whenever the video does not load or play. To add a fallback image, refer to the section settings table in Step 3 below.

# Set up a video with text overlay section

To set up a Video with text overlay section:

  1. Go to Customize theme. At the top of the page, use the dropdown to select a template that contains a Video with text overlay section. For example, select the Home page template.

    Note

    The section can be added into any page, except Checkout and Giftcard pages. To add the section into the current page, select Add section > Video with text overlay. Refer to Shopify help: Add a section (opens new window)

  2. From the side menu, select Video with text overlay.

  3. Select a setting described in the following table.

Setting name Description
Video URL In the Video URL box, enter a URL for the video. YouTube and .mp4 links are accepted.
Aspect ratio – mobile Use the dropdown Aspect ratio – mobile to set a size for the video inside the section. This setting applies to mobile display devices, and the options are: Standard, Widescreen, Extra wide, and Full screen.
Aspect ratio – desktop Use the dropdown Aspect ratio – desktop to set a size for the video inside the section. This setting applies to desktop display devices, and the options are: Same as mobile, Standard, Widescreen, Extra wide, and Full screen.
Fallback image Use the following Fallback image selector options to set up an image inside the section. The image is shown if the video does not load or play.
  • To add an image, choose Select image, and then upload an image or select an image file from your store’s file library.
  • To replace an image, choose Change > Change image, and then select or upload a new image.
  • To remove an image, select Change > Remove image.
  • Select the Add alt text link, and then enter a brief description of the image into the Image alt text box. Refer to Shopify help: Adding alt text to media (opens new window)
Fallback image > Connect dynamic source To display a fallback image from a dynamic source, select the Connect dynamic source icon beside the Fallback image selector, and then choose a metafield to add. Refer to Shopify help: Metafields (opens new window)
Layout > Display text overlay on a card Select the checkbox Display text overlay on a card to show/ hide a card behind the section’s text overlay area. Refer to Shopify help: Cards (opens new window)
Layout > Style Select the Style radio buttons to set the section’s video width to Full width or Inset.
Layout > Content position Select the Content position dropdown to position the section’s text overlay area. The dropdown options are: Top left, Top center, Top right, Middle left, Middle center, Middle right, Bottom left, Bottom center, and Bottom right.
Layout > Text alignment Select the Text alignment dropdown to align text inside the text overlay area to the Left, Center, or Right.
Content > Title In the Title box, enter text to display as heading (title) text inside the section’s text overlay area.
Content > Title > Insert dynamic source To display title text from a dynamic source, select the Insert dynamic source icon beside the Title box, and then choose a metafield to add. Refer to Shopify help: Metafields (opens new window)
Content > Heading size Select the Heading size radio buttons to set the heading to use the same text size as Base or Template text. This setting applies to the heading inside the text overlay area.
Content > Text In the Text box, enter text to display as body text inside the section’s text overlay area. Format the text, and/ or add links, using the Text editor pane.
Content > Text > Insert dynamic source To display (body) text from a dynamic source, select the Insert dynamic source icon beside the Text box, and then choose a metafield to add. Refer to Shopify help: Metafields (opens new window)
Content > Button link In the Button link box, enter a URL for the section’s button to use or select a store page to link to. The button is displayed inside the section’s text area. To remove a link, select the X icon inside the text box.
Content > Button link > Connect dynamic source To display a button link from a dynamic source, select the Connect dynamic source icon beside the Button link box, and then choose a metafield to add. Refer to Shopify help: Metafields (opens new window)
Content > Button text In the Button text box, enter text to display as a label for the section’s button. The button is displayed inside the section’s text area.
Content > Button text > Insert dynamic source To display a button text from a dynamic source, select the Insert dynamic source icon beside the Button text box, and then choose a metafield to add. Refer to Shopify help: Metafields (opens new window)
Color > Color scheme Use the Color scheme dropdown to set the section’s color scheme to Primary, Secondary, Tertiary or Quaternary. Refer to Colors.
Color > Use gradient for background Select the checkbox Use gradient for background to turn on/ off using a gradient as the section’s background.
Theme settings Select Theme settings to access additional settings for the section. Refer to Section theme settings menu.
Remove section Select Remove section to delete the section from the current page.

# Configure a block within a video with text overlay section

A default Video with text overlay section contains no blocks. To configure a block inside the section:

  1. Go to Customize theme. At the top of the page, use the dropdown to select a template that contains a Video with text overlay section.

  2. From the side menu, expand the Video with text overlay section menu.

  3. To configure an existing block, select the block from the side menu.

    To add a new block, select Add block, choose a block to add, and then select the block you added.

  4. Apply a block setting described in the following table.

Block name Block description Block setting(s)
Sticker Overlays the section with a stylized sticker. Refer to Stickers.
Shape divider Displays a stylized separator between the current section and the next/ previous section. Refer to Shape divider.
